Disposable Email Accounts
« on: August 15, 2010, 03:01:41 AM »
You will be automatically banned if you try to use a disposable email account such as the ones in the list below. A lot of these will only accept mail for 10-60 minutes (enough time to validate an email address) and then route mail to an alternate spam email which is regularly deleted or just blocked.

If you have been banned in error, please register with an alternate email and contact a staff member so we can correct it. You will have to change your email address!

This list will be updated. Please add to this list if you find any on your site.  8)

Good Idea. I added to mine. Suprised how many had used already. A couple I already had blocked.

I've had 3 of them blocked for awhile but then started noticing others. So, I did some research and compiled a list. I'm sure there are more, most ending with a particular country like "example.de". Those I'll need to translate first to make sure. And if they are I'll add them to the list as well. ;)

The easiest way to tell is to check the email in a browser. Just only use everything after the "@". For example:

"me@example.fr" should be "example.fr"

This will take you to the main site that hosts the email. Some are masked and will redirect you to another site but it is easy to tell which are legit and which are not after checking them out.

Maybe I should tell everyone how to stop users with these types of email address.

1.  Create a New Ban.
2.  Name it whatever you wish but something that you'll know that it is for this purpose.
3.  Scroll down to the email trigger and add an email as a wildcard such as "*@hotmail.com". Please note that this will stop everyone from registering who tries to use that email in their registration!
4.  Click Save.
5.  Click "Add New Trigger" to add another email.

Remember, you must add each email as a separate trigger. There is supposed to be a way to add more than one on a line but it does not seem to work as expected. Also, when you save each one separately it is easier to find them say if you need to undo it and allow those emails to register again.  :thumb:

This has a list of current and past forum spammers that seem to pop up, it has a vast number of records, however it comes with a search function so you can enter a particular e-mail or IP to check that members on your site are genuine.  :thumb:

I use that here and on many others sites that I work with. However, a lot of those email address are not there and SFS currently only shows full email addresses.

What I posted above will stop those particular domain addresses as wildcards. SFS will block "12345 @ 163.c0m" but not "* @ 163.c0m" as a wildcard. Well, not that I'm aware of. The wildcard will block any thing from that email domain. Keep in mind that a lot of those disposable email sites tend to use many different domain names for email addresses. They are always changing to try to stay ahead of the game. They probably hundreds, if not thousands, more out there.

Also, what I posted is also good for just blocking a domain email that you may not want at your site but is not a spammer. Might just be someone you don't like, etc.

It would be nice if you could enter those into your SFS admin settings.  :thumb:

I've collected close to 800 spam & disposable email domains over the years. I'm gonna link to google docs instead of posting them if that okay?

Can you explain further what the wildcard is about and why it blocks email domain?

Thanks

"*" is a wildcard. It means anything. For instance, dummy@dummy.com would be included in *@dummy.com. It would include all emails from that domain.

These domains listed in the first topic are used by spammers and hackers, etc. so, they are blocked on this site.
